LISTEN: APRIL VERCH, 'BELLE ELECTION'

For album number 10, Canadian fiddler April Verch teamed up with producer Casey Driessen and found inspiration right at home -- The Newpart takes its name from the Verch family room where her father's country band would rehearse. Verch first gained traction as a stepdancer before taking up fiddle and finding her voice. The new album brings all of those talents to bear -- sometimes all at once in tracks conceived specifically so she can dance, play, and sing simultaneously. Driessen even built a special recording platform to ensure the pieces sounded their best.

Even as she strives for vibrant originality, Verch also delves deep into classic, mid-century fiddle songs, as on the album's first single, "Belle Election." She first heard the tune on a John Patterson recording and made it her own on The Newpart -- with the help of band mates Cody Walters and Hayes Griffin. Verch says, "Though I was raised with the old-time Canadian fiddle traditions and, at first, more specifically, the Ottawa Valley style of fiddling, I have certainly branched out and become passionate about a lot of other genres of music over the course of my career. I’ve always felt strongly that one should play what they love, and not just what they think 'they come from.' When you trace the roots and branches of all of these traditions, they are connected."

She continues, "I think the recording of John Patterson playing 'Belle Election' is what initially drew me to the tune; the way he played it connected with me. What I feel makes it work for us as a trio is the fact that, even though none of us come from the old-time American tradition, Cody, Hayes, and I all really love it and we approach it by getting as close as we can and sending it through our various musical filters -- Canadian, bluegrass, midwestern old-time, etc. That way it ends up sounding like us, the April Verch Band, instead of anything else. And it pays respect to the tradition we’ve pulled it from, and our own backgrounds. But, in the end, it hopefully just speaks to people the way John Patterson’s version spoke to me."

The Newpart will be released on April 7.
